Inside Our Perinatal Program - From NICU to Postpartum Care

Hospitals do not use coconut oil because it is trendy. They use it because one simple ingredient can meet several routine care needs for newborns and mothers.

Conscious Coconut supplies raw, organic coconut oil to perinatal programs across the country. It is used in NICUs, newborn nurseries, postpartum rooms and lactation programs for skin protection, breastfeeding support, medical device lubrication and adhesive removal.

These are the same practical uses that make it valuable at home.

Protecting Newborn and NICU Skin

A newborn’s skin barrier is still developing. Premature infants have even thinner skin, which loses moisture quickly and is more vulnerable to dryness, friction and irritation.

Coconut oil is applied to help:

  • Reduce dryness and peeling

  • Limit moisture loss

  • Support the developing skin barrier

  • Protect skin from repeated friction

  • Keep delicate skin soft and moisturized

Clinical studies involving premature infants have found that topical coconut oil can improve skin condition, reduce water loss through the skin and support healthy weight gain. Some studies have also reported lower rates of skin infections in infants receiving regular coconut oil applications.

Parents use it at home for many of the same reasons: newborn peeling, dry patches, diaper-area irritation, baby massage and everyday moisturizing.

Lactation and Nipple Care

Breastfeeding and pumping can leave nipples dry, tender, cracked and irritated. Coconut oil moisturizes the skin and reduces friction without lanolin, petroleum, fragrance or added ingredients.

Lauric Acid: A Naturally Occurring Fatty Acid

Coconut oil is naturally rich in lauric acid, a medium-chain fatty acid also present in human breast milk. Lauric acid is known for its antimicrobial properties, while coconut oil’s emollient properties help moisturize and protect the skin barrier.

Applied after breastfeeding, coconut oil can soften dry skin, reduce friction and support the healing of irritated or cracked nipples.

A Plant-Based Alternative to Lanolin

Lanolin is derived from sheep’s wool and is not suitable for every mother. Coconut oil provides a plant-based alternative for those who are sensitive to lanolin or prefer a product with one recognizable ingredient.

Conscious Coconut contains raw, USDA Certified Organic and Fair Trade coconut oil—nothing else. It does not need to be removed before breastfeeding.

Individual packets provide a fresh, controlled portion for each use and fit easily inside hospital lactation kits, pumping bags and bedside supplies.

Benefits During Breastfeeding and Pumping

  • Moisturizes dry, cracked or irritated nipples

  • Reduces friction during breastfeeding and pumping

  • Supports the skin’s natural barrier

  • Provides naturally occurring antimicrobial properties

  • Offers a plant-based alternative to lanolin

  • Can be applied directly to the nipple or inside pump flanges

Clinical studies have examined coconut oil for nipple pain, cracking and skin recovery during the postpartum period. Findings support its use as a simple, effective option for moisturizing and protecting nipple skin during breastfeeding.

Medical Device Lubrication

Premature and newborn skin is thin, permeable and highly sensitive to friction. CPAP prongs, feeding tubes and other medical devices can repeatedly rub against the same fragile areas.

Raw, organic coconut oil offers a gentle alternative to synthetic or petroleum-based lubricants. Its naturally high concentration of lauric acid provides emollient, anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial benefits that help reduce friction, calm irritation and support the developing skin barrier.

When incorporated into NICU protocols, coconut oil may contribute to improved skin integrity, reduced transepidermal water loss and greater comfort for infants requiring respiratory support or enteral feeding.

Individual Conscious Coconut packets give care teams a fresh, controlled portion for each application without using a shared jar or bottle.

Adhesive Removal

Tape, electrodes, sensors and dressings are applied and removed frequently in newborn and NICU care. Because premature and newborn skin is thin and still developing, repeated pulling and rubbing can cause redness, irritation and skin injury.

Coconut oil helps loosen medical adhesives and sticky residue, allowing them to be removed with less pulling, scrubbing and friction.

Raw coconut oil acts as both an adhesive remover and an emollient. It breaks down sticky residue while moisturizing the skin, making it especially useful on areas that are already dry or irritated.

Unlike removers made with alcohol or strong solvents, coconut oil does not sting or dry the skin. It leaves the area moisturized rather than stripped.

At home, it can also be used to remove residue from bandages, medical tape, temporary tattoos and stickers on the skin.

Why Hospitals Use Individual Packets and Wipes

In a hospital, coconut oil cannot come from a shared jar. Each patient needs an individual portion that has not been repeatedly opened or touched.

Single-use packets and wipes help hospitals:

  • Reduce cross-contamination

  • Provide a fresh portion for each use

  • Control how much product is dispensed

  • Store it easily at the bedside

  • Include it in lactation kits and discharge supplies

Individual packaging makes just as much sense at home. Packets fit easily inside diaper bags, pumping bags, changing stations, travel kits and first-aid kits without the mess of carrying a jar.

Coconut oil melts at approximately 76°F, so it may be firm, creamy or completely liquid depending on the temperature. This natural change in consistency does not affect its quality.

Feminine Care and Other Clinical Uses

Coconut oil is also used beyond newborn and lactation care.

Postpartum and Feminine Care

After childbirth, coconut oil can moisturize dry, tender skin around the vulva and perineum. It provides lubrication without fragrance, petroleum or a long list of added ingredients.

Women also use coconut oil for vaginal dryness related to menopause and hormonal changes. It can be applied as a moisturizer or lubricant to reduce dryness and friction.

Oil-based lubricants should not be used with latex condoms because oil can weaken the latex.

General Radiation Skin Care

Radiation therapy can leave treated skin dry, tight, tender or irritated. Coconut oil may be used as an emollient to moisturize the skin and reduce uncomfortable dryness and friction.

It should not be applied to open or blistered skin. Radiation centers may also provide specific instructions about when skin products can be applied before treatment.

Vulvar and Vaginal Care After Pelvic Radiation

Pelvic radiation can cause dryness, tenderness and irritation of the vulva and vaginal tissue. Coconut oil can moisturize the external vulvar area and reduce friction.

Some women also use coconut oil as a vaginal moisturizer or lubricant after treatment, including with vaginal dilators used to help maintain tissue flexibility. Individual packets provide a fresh, measured portion without repeatedly opening a shared container.

Colonoscopy Preparation

Frequent bowel movements and wiping during colonoscopy preparation can quickly irritate the skin around the anus.

Applying coconut oil before beginning the prep—and reapplying as needed—creates a moisturizing barrier that helps reduce friction, soreness and raw skin. Individual packets make it easy to keep a clean portion beside the toilet or include in a colonoscopy preparation kit.
